What the work feels like
Typical day
You stand at the cutting table. You transfer a pattern to the fabric and check the grain lines carefully. Then you sew the pieces together with a machine. You iron the garment for the final fit check.
- You advise customers personally and listen carefully to their wishes.
- You create sketches and consider style, budget and body proportions.
- You take measurements of customers for individual patterns.
- You transfer the patterns to the fabric, cut it exactly and check the grain lines.
- You reinforce pattern pieces with interfacing and sew them together with a machine or by hand.
- You shape the clothing, iron it carefully and check the seams.
- You check symmetry and the overall look during the final inspection before delivering the piece.
Working conditions
You work in studios of your chosen focus, in fashion houses or clothing ateliers. Your working hours are regular. But tight deadlines create temporary pressure.
