01 · Overview
You plan and carry out track construction work, maintain railway tracks, and ensure safe rail facilities.
As a Gleisbauer/in EFZ, you actively shape Switzerland's transport infrastructure. You prepare construction sites, lay ballast and sleepers, and install tracks with precision. You operate heavy machinery, carry out inspections, and always ensure the highest safety standards. Your craft keeps trains safely on the rails and reliably connects regions. You work closely in a team and take responsibility for the infrastructure.

Training takes place as a dual apprenticeship in a company and at a vocational school.

Career changers can enter directly, for example through a shortened apprenticeship in a related construction trade or by taking a subsequent vocational exam.

You stand on the ballast bed and compact the substructure, while train traffic pauses in the background. You use measuring tools to check the track gauge and adjust the rails with millimetre precision for the next shift.
You work outdoors in all weather conditions on rail facilities and construction sites. Your workplaces include public and private railways as well as specialised track construction companies.
