What the work feels like

Typical day

You work in the studio to create sketches or models. At the same time, you calculate material costs. On set or on stage, you then coordinate the implementation with craftsmen and technicians.

  • You analyse text drafts and develop a coherent production concept together with the director.
  • You create sketches, CAD plans and scale models for structures, furniture and props.
  • You calculate costs and material requirements, especially for smaller productions and exhibitions.
  • You design the visual atmosphere for final rehearsals together with lighting designers.
  • You use modern visualisation techniques like 3-D models and video projections for planning.

Working conditions

You work in theatres, opera houses, film productions and event construction companies. You are usually self-employed and change your workplace depending on the project.
