What the work feels like

Typical day

You stand at your workbench and carefully plane a new ebony fingerboard. Then you check with trained ears whether the strings sit perfectly on the bridge.

  • You repair and restore violins, violas, and cellos with great care.
  • You make string instruments completely by hand using carefully selected wood.
  • You work maple and spruce with planes, rasps, and fine carving tools.
  • You replace broken bridges, pegs, or fingerboards and glue the parts.
  • You check the sound quality of each instrument with trained ears.
  • You advise customers on maintenance, repair, and rental of instruments.
  • You bend the ribs in steam and fit them exactly to the templates.
